Timber internal stairs - what do people paint them so they withstand the foot traffic? Is a particular colour better?

I love the look of white but worried it’ll show scuff marks easily. I don’t want something that will need regular maintenance.

We painted in Acquatred satin finish as recommended by our painter. Very hard wearing.
