Is it possible to do Pompeii as a day trip from Rome (without a tour)?

We already have an airbnb booked in Rome for a week so would love to do it in just a day, but may reconsider.

I took a day trip to Pompeii from Napoli. It would be a long train ride! Go for an official self-guided tour device from the site. Avoid the tourist leaches that attack you once you step foot off the train. The devices in the official Pompeii are cheaper and better than those they try to sell you!

I wouldn't do Pompei without a tour though, the ruins look the same and you want to know the history behind each place. Just the ruins will take you at least 4 hours to explore. If you really want to do it, I wouldn't do a day trip. I did Pompei from Napoli

You could but you’ll be in for a very long day. If you’re in Rome consider visiting Ostia Antica. It’s only 25 mins by train from Rome.

We took an hour train from naples then to pompeii and spent 5 hours there. Then caught a train to the amalfi coast to sleep. It was totally doable!!! Not sure you would want to do it and go back to Rome but it is probably possible
