83k words, 42 chapters and a lot of blood and sweat went into this novel.

I got bored now that I don’t have it to work on for a while so I started a second story featuring the same protagonist.

Now in the 3rd chapter and I stopped.

I am not sure how much I can assume the reader knows about him.

So, I thought I would read the next novel in Baldacci's new Atlee Pine series to see how he handled it. I read the first one a while back.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Way to go! You're doing the right thing. Read the second book in a couple of series and see how the authors handled it.

Assume the reader knows nothing. But don't retell the previous story, build the character and environment as it pertains to the sequel.
