Morning everyone, on a freezing Sunday here in the UK!

Can I ask for advice on office chairs for my son please? We did lots of research over several months, found and bougth one and after 2 days the up and down mechanism had broken.

My son will be using it at his bedroom desk for homework and some gaming (he has a PC). He is 6ft 4”, 16 years old. We would like one with a high back and headrest. Budget is tricky because the really good ergonomic ones are £500+. We ideally don’t want to spend more than £300.

Any help or suggestions, especially with links, would be so appreciated!

I buy most of my furniture second hand (off FB marketplace, eBay etc) that way you get a good quality thing for a lower price. I tend to ressrch the item first so I know what to ask the seller. If you're careful you can get something that's in perfect condition, just unwanted. Saves it going to landfill so good for the environment as well as your pocket!

At 6’4” at 16 yrs old, there’s a realistic possibility of having back problems in later life. If he has quite a sedentary lifestyle (no criticism intended) for the next 3-5 years, as many will due to gaming, studies, lectures etc, then it could compound that risk.

I’d say if you can find a way to afford it, then spending £500-800 on a good ergonomic set-up now save him £thousands in physio, aches and pains over the next few decades. And it could last him decades too.

I still have my chair and height adjustable desk from 2013. In use every day. I’ve only ever changed the arm pads on the chair, once (£35) and the motor on the desk (£125).

Just a heads up… We bought an office chair for my grandson who lives with us. His bedroom carpet is ruined where he moves from one side of the room to the other....it's stretched the carpet. Not sure if getting it relaid by a carpet fitter will remedy it.
