I'm keen to take my 10, 16 and 17 year old children on a barge/canal boat holiday for a week in August

The best bit is that the lowdown comes from YOU. Round here, you are the influencer. You shape the board and make it great. We want you to get involved by writing posts and comments to inspire us, teach us, challenge us or simply make us laugh. The power is in your hands, literally.

.. It's something we've always fancied trying but never done before.

Does anyone have any recommendations of companies or general tips or advice?

We would like activities to do if we stop off during the day too. We are based in West Yorkshire but happy to travel.

This is something I've always wanted to do too but the cost has always put me off.

Pennine cruisers Skipton.
They do day hire too if you want to practice first.

Firstly, kids the ages of yours will love it!

We’ve been taking our children since they were 1-2. They’re over 30 now and still come with us every year!

Depends on how many locks you want to do and whether you like peace from the family in all weather's.

You can either do a cruiser on larger rivers or the Norfolk broads and drive from inside the boat or a narrowboat on the smaller canals. Narrowboat you drive from the rear and are exposed outside to elements with enough space for 2 or 3 people to socialise.

The broads and bigger rivers have less locks to slow you down

It's a gentle speed but we always take activities for "bored" moments.
