Trustedhousesitters is another good option for accommodations, at least - it's also something you can do fairly extensively in the UK, too, to build up references and apply for more long-term positions.

Another vote for Trusted Housesitters (and pet sitters). I think they started in the UK as they have many opportunities there and around the world.
