I have a 50L at the moment and I'm contemplating a downsize.

If you not moving between cold and hot climate the 40 is fine. We are 3 months into 6 or 7 mth with a 40ltr each and it’s fine. Just have to watch the weight for the airlines (7kg) if you carry on.

Honestly, it depends on a few factors. If you’re swapping climates then yes, you need more space for bulkier items. If you like shopping on your travels then yes. If you like a bigger wardrobe selection, then yes. Etc.

If you’re sticking to warm climates, you’re fairly minimalistic, and you don’t buy souvenirs, it’s perfect.
