Does Google care about meta descriptions?

It seems meta descriptions are becoming less and less important as Google is just re-writing them.

Anyone have information/a case study about meta descriptions and CTR that is recent (2021 or 2022)?

I find the opposite to be true, using meta descriptions to add contextually relevant semantic keywords improves rankings

Meta descriptions are still very important, make jo misrake anout it. Google overwrites tags when other content from that page is more relevant to the search.

Google will auto fill with your existing content. Best SEO is to use that meta to make sure your telling google your main phrases..
