Ideas on how to use my 2 checked bag allotment if I only have one (small) suitcase?

I usually travel very light and don't check, but I could take some things between my apartments.

What will the airline (Air France/Delta) accept to be checked?

Don’t know about Air France but I have used Home Depot medium size (I think) heavy duty boxes. They are almost the exact size limit for many airlines and are very strong with some added duct tape. I moved household items to Colombia from the US doing this.

we've moved a Christmas tree (in box) and a boxed set of side tables, no problem, as long as they are less than the total size/weight allotment

I know Delta will accept almost any solid container that fits within their size requirements of less than 70 linear inches total. We’ve used cardboard boxes, plastic tubs with the lids taped securely, modified pvc pipe (golf clubs), etc.
