I rescued a dog 4 months ago, and she has always been friendly towards everyone. Lately, she has began to bark at strangers a few minutes after they enter the house. Initially she is fine, but then after her excitement wears away from someone being at the door, it seems as if she realizes it’s a stranger and then she nonstop starts barking and starts jumping at them.
I’ll give her a bone and she will be distracted and forget about it, but wondering how to train this behavior so that she doesn’t react this way to strangers.
Any tips?
My dog always barks at strangers
Your dog is doing what she is supposed to do. A good training trick is, get her a bed and a dedicated spot you can train her do to do a “down stay” or “go to bed”.
Start training the down stay and show her that’s where she should go.
I will sometimes put one of my dogs outside if a stranger comes in the house and then let him come back in and I show him that the stranger is not a danger.
It will take time, but you don’t want to completely train your dog not to alert to a stranger in the home. As much as our dogs are our kids, they also have a job to protect their humans.
What type of dog is she? Also female dogs by nature are more protective.
