He's 1 and half years old.

Thank you in advance.

Close the door to the bathroom.

Purchase a trash can with lid. I use this one and have never had an issue.

I have to admit, I'm not sure how to teach him to stay out of it besides saying "no" and repeating it and stopping him when you catch him. But you can prevent it by keeping the bin in the bathroom cabinet if you have one. We have a cabinet under our sink and we keep it in there. It works pretty good for us.

How about simply closing the bathroom door. When my girls were puppies every single room in my home was closed and then it just became habit so now I always keep on my doors closed.

I second the lid. And closing door most times. If you really want to try and teach him to leave it alone, leave the door open when you’re supervising (like watching tv in the living room/right next to the bathroom). Work on recall and leave it. When you catch him wandering that way, call him back and reward. If you catch him sniffing it, say “ah-ah, leave it” and when he comes back reward with a treat or praise.

I have a border collie and he is the smartest dog I have ever had, yet getting into the bathroom trash is the one thing he absolutely will not stop doing! He follows all commands and behaves so well EXCEPT for this!

Put it out of reach, keep him out of the bathroom, or get a can with a lid.
