How experienced in backpacking should one be before backpacking around Europe?
SOMEONE TOLD ME: My first backpacking experience was in Europe. I actually found this FORUM super handy when I first joined, just before starting my trip. Ended up learning heaps of tips from a veteran backpacker and we’re still friends, to this day.
I live in the US. My first experience backpacking was in Peru and Ecuador. My second time was western Europe.
Because of my first experience, I was a bit over prepared for backpacking in Europe. Turns out, English isn't uncommon and a smart phone makes navigating so easy it's cheating.

Zero. U will always learn something on the go. And that's where it gets interesting! Meeting people of different backgrounds and cultures, finding your way around, etc. it can't get any better than that!
Stay in a hostel, explore the place with your roommates together. And take the free walking tours.
I went to Ireland with zero plan, a backpack and three weeks. Had the time of my life and met lifelong friends.
None is needed, I did it for a year straight no problem, I’d just recommend doing research as you get ready and you should be fine.
Get out there get it done, got thrown I. At the deep end turned up in Thailand with 500 quid in my pocket went to Cambodia for a year, quite heavy duty and some of it a ball ache but literally sometimes you got to go wtf let’s roll.
Not much. I’d recommend a smaller backpack. Weight and space can become an issue on long walks and packed trains. You don’t need much as far as clothes. Most hostels have laundry service.
It’s a great place to start. It was my first backpacking trip, and I learned so much. I made mistakes, but it’s a good place to make those mistakes and learn.
You don't need any. Just read up and ask questions. If you are nervous start easy in London or Amsterdam and work your way around from there. You will be amazed how well you can communicate with very little common language.
My first go was Costa Rica and Panama. Way back when it was still dirt roads to cross Costa Rica. Everything since has been a cake walk lmao.
