Just fyi you can totally negotiate what to pay. And, for a cheaper alternative the local water taxi is amazing.

You don't buy tickets. You just pay the gondolier. It's best to agree on the route and price before getting in. If you want to go down the grand canal make sure you tell them.

Sometimes you can go on viator. My husband and I did a tour of Venice that included a gondola ride.
