.. (that we all have made) of getting the URL structure wrong on a page for the best / most searched for keyword? - links? more % of content with the "better" keyword?

first question is...are you getting traffic to that page? is it organic? if yes, then create a new page with correct info, and then do a 301 redirect. if you're not getting traffic, doesn't matter much...just create new page and get rid of old one. there are a lot of variables here...and a lot of question marks. would be helpful if u gave us more info.

301 redirect is your easiest and most effective solution. You can also add a canonical tag if your root domain is different. I transferred a ~200 page website to a new brand URL and we had very little disruption in rankings or traffic.
