Painting the fronts of the stairs White or Surfmist

Hi I posted previously about our new cast panel screen doors & today I decided the stairs looked too dark so I sanded them back & I am going to stain & varnish the top Black Japan & the fronts of each stair were going to be Surfmist like the house however when I started painting on the 4 in 1 primer, which is white like the door & I kind of liked it.

Could I please get your opinion on painting the fronts of the stairs White or Surfmist?

Both would look OK. Maybe paint a couple in Surfmist and see which one you like the best

Surfmist might be a bit softer once the steps are black?
