I write fanfiction. Most of it is garbage but I find it a lot easier than creating original stories. If I try to create something new I'm just sitting there staring at my computer.

When I watch my favorite movies or TV shows new storylines for those characters easily come to me.

I suppose because those characters and worlds are already created for you it's easier?

How do I apply that to new stories?

I can easily crank out 5,000 words in a fanfic but struggle with telling those new stories.

I make it through a page and I just get stuck there.

Anyone else relate?

I'm sure it isn't garbage! I've written both fanfiction and original fiction, the important thing is to write what you're inspired by and what you enjoy writing about. The lovely thing about writing fanfiction is you've got a ready made audience and the possibility of feedback.

I write both. When I’m in a slump I write fanfic; it helps me keep writing when my original works don’t cooperate. There is absolutely nothing wrong with writing fanfiction. The important thing is, do you enjoy it? It sounds like you enjoy fanfiction; original work, not so much. That’s perfectly fine. Do what fulfills you.

I am currently trying my hand at writing fanfiction. I started about a week ago and it’s interesting so far.

I’ve been struggling with writers block so I’m hoping this will jumpstart my creativity.

Fanfiction is a great way to learn to write. You get to explore themes with characters you already know, and eventually you'll be able to make up your own characters.
