I have some power chewers! They absolutely love bones but I cant seem to find a good bone for them! Any recommendations that won’t send my babies to the Vet?
I have some power chewers!
Also large bully sticks, collagen sticks and trachea chews. There is a great bully stick holder I get from bow wow labs which hold ls the bully stick so they can’t choke on the end piece.
I use antlers. Now they do have some risk. Some dogs try to bite down too hard on antlers and can break their teeth. Both of mine chew antlers and so far so good (over 5 years). I watch their teeth and the vet checks them every time I take them in. My boy is a serious power chewer. He ate a knuckle bone in less than 10 minutes as a puppy (and got very sick). Bully sticks are like milk bones to him. The other key with antlers is quality. Old dried out antlers will splinter easier (and are usually cheaper). I get mine from mountain dog chews and they have always been top quality
Yak chews and kong toys. The black ones are the tougher ones and my bullys take forever to rip off the tiniest pieces. You can add their kibble and applesauce or pumpkin puree to the middle and freeze for extra enrichment but mine like the toys themselves as well. I wouldn't suggest any type of antler. I have 1 dog with 2 chipped teeth and another with a tooth that's cracked in half and infected because of using antlers and nyla bones. Anything you can't make a mark or indent in with your fingernail is too hard for them to be chewing on. I know we all want toys and chews that last a while so we get our moneys worth but trust me you don't want the bills that come with doggie dental problems they're astronomically expensive...Take it from me.
Benebones are what work for our dogs. They come in different sizes and styles. We mostly use the wishbone and dental styles and they last a few months for our power chewers. Kong and West Paw Qwizl have been the toughest for putting treats into.
I had an antler for my dogs but my boy choked and swallowed a large chunk of it, I went through all the toys and therew away all the antlers and bones. Stuffed animals don't last long but they play with the outside after I take the stuffing out for months sometimes years and they also really like the tough fabric squeak snakes, they have never managed to eat one of those. Benebones and rubber kong toys are a good alternative, they break off in much smaller pieces.
I’ve given my dogs antlers, buffalo horns and yak chews for years with absolutely no issues. I’ve got 3 staffordshire bull terriers, my old boy was a staffy too and I've had rottweilers so all extreme chewers and these have all held up well with no teeth problems. Yak chews are more of a long lasting treat as they can eat that.
Raw bones. No rawhide or cooked bones would be my suggestion. Although anything that is hard for them to chew will be tougher on their teeth too. It’s kind of a risk vs benefit. I buy a big bag of raw bones from the butcher and I throw them away when I gets small enough they could choke on it
