– I am going to Europe for 3 months from August to early November. Then I have a cruise to New Orleans, Roatan, Belize, and Cozumel starting February 10. My US passport expires July 2024 and my Irish passport expires November 2024. So do the foreign ports require a 3 month grace period or a 6 month grace period?

If 6, do I submit my US for renewal and travel on my Irish? Or try to expedite?

Thanks so much.

Apply to renew both of them now. Expedite both, if possible. Wait times have gone up and down a lot over the last few years. You’re spending a lot of money on these vacations, why risk it? Not to mention that when you are in that odd international limbo, traveling, in an airport without valid documents, it can be very unpleasant.

your only problem is USA Just renew before you leave. As a US citizen you are required to use the US passport to enter.

You need to check each individual country. Mexico and Belize don’t require time on your passport. Many countries require 6 months.

You will need the American passport to re enter the USA. So expedite that one.

The US passport website suggests (a) renew your passport approximately 9 months before it expires (b) certain countries (and airlines) require passports to remain valid for up to six months after travel and (c) if you need a new passport within 8 weeks or less, you need an expedited process. Just sharing with you the guidance from the gov website - you can now apply it to your situation. You have to check with the destination countries and see the duration of passport validity they require. Your cruise company should be able to help.

My husband has a German and Australian passport. He ran into that problem once and traveled with the passport that was not expiring. You can TRY to expedite your American one, but you have a backup. You are luckier than most people.
