How is it possible that I just got my car tax renewal in yesterday and went to pay it and it’s went up £25 already!

I think the letters were sent at the pre-budget uplift rates. Mine said £30 but when I went to pay online they charged me £35.

Mine renewed in Jan and it had gone up. £173.25 a year i pay now for a 1.2 Renault Clio, it was cheaper last year. Hubby pays about £660 a year for a 3.6 diesel Range Rover sport.

I just don’t understand how any normal person is supposed to sustain all this!? Council tax is up, water is up, rent is up, fuel is up, my internet & mobile are up 17%! food has shot up massively! let’s not even talk about gas & electric!

I just don’t understand where they expect us to magic all this extra money from! I work 40hours a week & I’m now completely drowning!

Car tax went up in the budget in March to start on 1st April, DVLA have printed May's renewals before the increase is announced so put a disclaimer in red on the renewal saying prices may not be correct if altered in the budget. This happens every year. ( Post office counter clerk who has the joy of explaining it every year).

My Discovery is about £550 a year, I think…

But I need a big vehicle that can tow.

Our van is a lot bigger but half that to tax.

Road fund licences went up in the budget yet less work being done to maintain the roads more money in government pockets just like council tax pay more get less.

I went from paying £240 a year tax on my BMW to paying £300 a year for an insignia! Would have thought it would go down as its classed as a family car. insurance is better though so probably equals it out. But we're paying all this road tax to drive on roads full of fricking pot holes!

We pay zero for our cars as they are all classic cars… Oldest being 50 years old… If it breaks we fix it… Saving the planet is never gonna work while we throw so much away including vehicles.

We bought a brand new car in September, and we are having to pay £510 a year for years 2-5. you’d think a brand new car would be cheaper to tax because of being cleaner, less emissions etc. how it can be classed as ‘luxury’ when it’s just a standard car I’ll never know.

Mine used to be over the financial year (April), used to annoy me. Basically when they sent out the letter they hadn't done next year's budget, then by the time the letter reaches me and I go to pay, it's increased slightly with the new budget. Now my tax is Jan/Feb time so it's not over the budget period but that was always frustrating.

All depends on car and year. My mates just bought a car and tax for it was 630. 1st April that went to 695!
