An app called today tix, on the morning of performances, you can get what they call rush tickets at a set time in the morning, great seats usually in stalls and cost around £20 to £30, you do have to be quick and there is a limited amount per day.

If you don't have your heart set on particular shows you can go to the box office in person in Leicester Square and they sell tickets that haven't been sold for that days performance for about that price if not cheaper.

Depends what you want to see. I just got Hamilton tickets at 20 pounds each. Weekday matinee in June in one of the grand circle boxes.

Direct from the theatre, well in advance - use seatplan to look at reviews of seats to choose good value cheaper ones.

Todaytix app does flash sales all the time so download that and wait for a show you want.

London Theatre does sales (eg one from about November called the new year sale) and they also do kids week which runs during august. You get a child ticket free with an adult. This goes on sale in early June and Matilda goes in seconds so you’ll need to be on the ball if you’re dead set on that particular show. If you’re flexible you’ll get real bargains.

Why not find out if there are local amateur theatre companies near you. I live near Dartford and we have several small local theatres. They always put on really good productions and for a fraction of the cost of a West end theatre. Normally about £10 a seat. Ours has a bar as well.

Have you looked at companies that do coach and show? I have booked through them and they are heavily discounted due to getting group rates. You also don’t have the challenge of trains and underground in London xx
