My son has been really let down by his driving instructor

.. He has a test booked for Tuesday, after spending in excess of £1700 in driving lessons, but his instructor has just cancelled. We have found a car to use but will we need anything added to the car, to enable him to take the test?

L plates, rear view mirror for examiner, if you Google what you need for testing in your own car it will give you all the helpful info you need. Good luck to your son. I learnt to drive and passed in my own car.

You can take your test in your own car as long as you have an additional rear view mirror, L plates and no warning lights on the dash. Make sure he knows where everything is in the engine incase he gets asked and also how to pop the hood x

Make sure the insurance covers correctly as for now he will be a learner but if he passes, he wont be able to use that insurance as he will be a licence holder. I think you also need a 2nd mirror for the examiner. Make sure the car is clean, tidy and smells nice too.

I did my test in my own car. I even passed with a temporary rear view mirror stuck up because I had my windscreen replaced the week before and they broke my mirror 😂. I had never willed anything to stay stuck more 🙈. I didn’t need anything extra just my l plates and to make sure everything worked

Go online it tells you what they expect much easier than listening to people’s varying opinions as I think it probably depends on districts.

I took mine in my car, I didn’t add anything additional (just L plates), and needed someone to drive home after I passed for insurance purposes. That’s all!

You’ve probably already got this covered but make sure your son has had some practice in the replacement car beforehand as even exactly the same make and model of car can “feel” different, and you need to make sure he stands the best chance possible. Good luck!

You can buy an additional mirror in Halfords (but I think examiner can provide), the car has to have L plates, no warning lights on dashboard and be clean of all rubbish inside as well as insured for your son. It will also need a valid mot and road tax. My son was let down the night before so we quickly found someone but had my car as a back up. Unfortunately he didn’t pass as had literally 20 mins practice in the new car. Good luck to your son!

I'm sorry to hear about your son's experience with his driving instructor. As for your question, there are a few things that your son will need to make sure are in order before taking his driving test in a private car.

Firstly, the car must be properly insured for the test. You should contact your insurance provider to ensure that your policy covers your son while he is taking his driving test. The vehicle must also be roadworthy, with all necessary paperwork and MOT certification up to date.

In addition, the car must display L-plates (learner plates) on both the front and rear of the vehicle. Your son should also have a valid provisional driving license, and bring this with him to the test.

Finally, it's worth noting that the examiner will carry out a brief safety check of the car before the test begins, to ensure that it meets the necessary standards. This will include checking that the car's lights, brakes, and tires are all in good working order.

I hope this information is helpful, and wish your son the best of luck with his driving test!

My daughters instructors car broke down on morning of her test (in February) and used our car (she was insured already as a learner driver) and popped on the L plates and passed in it xx
