I need a bit of an advise. We live in a 1 bedroom apartment and we run all our appliances only on electric and there is no gas connection.

We have a meter (not a smart meter) which has 2 readings- one for day time and another one for night.

We switched to British Gas I think on 2021 since our energy supplier went bust, since then we have been charged one price for both readings. I was not aware of this until late 2022, since I had a baby and was busy with other issues in life.

When we figured in December 2022. We told BG to change the rates for the readings and to recalculate them. They took those changes only last month after constant follow ups. They still have not provided us with the re-calculation of the bill for the past 2 years and over and above they have charged like £1000 in total for the 3 months of feb to april-2023.

They have advised us last month that they are increasing the monthly debit to £250 pcm to clear the balance. But they have not yet come back to us on recalculation or reduction of the bill, we have contacted them multiple times.

Not sure what to do further.

Any help would be appreciated please. We would struggle if our monthly electricity prices increase.

Our highest bill was only £80 in the previous years even in winter months.

Raise a formal complaint, preferably in writing. Allow 8 weeks for resolution then, if necessary, refer the matter to the energy ombudsman.

Do you have any meter readings? Unless you're using lots of overnight electric you may not be better off on a dual tarrif, because of the extra you have to pay in the day time.
