Twice I have paid another publisher to do all the hard yards in producing my novel. Yes it cost money but they were great to work with and I made all the money back in sales.

I'll take your money. That's a positive outcome for me.

I have never heard of anyone making a profit while being published by a vanity press.

I worked at one for about two weeks answering phones and doing light filing: the paycheck didn't bounce.

Don't waste your money. Once they pocket your $$s, they have no vested interest in you.

There is no such thing as a positive outcome with a vanity publisher.

In my head, the best case outcome is you are paying a project manager to help you self publish.

If you have the budget and vet them for ethics and not being a scam, it's not the worst idea if you don't have the time or patience to teach yourself all the in's and outs of publishing

Vanity publishers take your money. They have no real interest in your work which is disheartening for writers who have chosen to take that path to publish their books. Traditional publishing contracts are difficult to get that’s why so many people choose to self publish, however many people have fallen foul of vanity presses.

They publish anyone willing to pay their exorbitant fees regardless of quality.

My only goal, when I just started out as an author, was to have a PUBLISHED BOOK. That was all I wanted to accomplish. I have learned so so so much since then, but because it was relatively cheap and I actually exerted quite a bit of creative control in the process, it was not a bad experience.
