So a friend of mine is renovating and some mates of his (ex-professional painters) have told him he needs to sand between coats of paint on his newly plastered home. I nearly passed out at the thought!! He said they said to do this to smooth over any drips or blobs.

I said to be careful with how much paint you have on your brushes and rollers and this won’t happen.

Do any of you sand between coats? I have painted heaps of houses and NEVER done it, nor needed to. It seems like such a HUGE waste of time!

Yes correct takes the furry feel off the paint finish. Also do it when painting doors, using a light grit sand paper.

The final arbiter. Read the instructions on the paint can. The paint manufacturer knows exactly what is required for a hood finish. You can never go wrong with following manufacturers directions on ANY building product. Never trust the word of trades because they are trying to do the job as quickly as possible.

Yep, we sprayed then backrolled then sanded (hubbies job to paint mine to sand).

We just finished a pretty substantial reno & extension and our painters sanded between coats. The results speak for themselves.

I know you're supposed to sand between coats on woodwork but I've never heard of doing that on walls. If they have that many drips on the walls they're doing something wrong!

We didn’t and you can tell the difference…wish we did.
you can get a pole sander and quickly sand it.

Yep, especially between/after primer coats on new plaster and preferably between coats of the topcoat. It definitely is a better result, you'd be surprised how much dust settles in the paint. We're not talking hard core sanding, just a light go over with the pole sander.

Yes, it is recommended to sand between coats and you will find most professional painters will, we haven’t on all our walls but some we have needed to.
