Got my first solo book signing tomorrow. Any tips?
I've got a bowl of sweets, contact cards with my blog details. No time now to order bookmarks or such.
Be friendly and ask them what they like to read. It might take longer to sign, but it'll make you more memorable to certain people. If you're memorable, they'll buy your next book. If you're awkward, they won't remember you.
Definitely a table cloth, and if you have a spare frame and can print off a one sheet about yourself and your books, that would be great. Pens and Sharpies, a pad to write notes if something comes up you want to remember, a charged phone so you can have somebody take pics, and a huge SMILE. Good luck, it's so much fun!
Got promo stuff for your next book? Newsletter subscription form? And munches and drinks for yourself. Hope it's busy and a positive day. Good luck!
1) know where the restrooms are and be able to give directions. (you may talk to a significant number of people for whom that is the main question. If you're helpful, they'll tend to remember. )
2) If you expect a lot of signing, get a large, flexible ice pack for your shoulder, and have somekind of anti-inflammatory medicine on hand.
3) Buying pens/ markers? Get "Archive grade" ink. Special formula to preserve the paper and resist fading.
