.. we have two multi fuel burners and very old storage heaters. We were given loads of surveys etc, told we could have the new heating and boiler along with solar panels and cavity wall insulation in the extension.

We were delighted however the extension which was here when we bought the house in 1997 has a dpc which is one brick higher than it should be we had no idea!

Therefore we couldn't have the cavity wall insulation, due to the guarantee not being able to cover it.

Unfortunately this means we can't have the rest of what we were told either, because there wouldn't be a big enough difference in what we have now re the level of efficiency to what the rest of the work would bring it up to.

At 65 and 68 years of age, we were hoping it would make our lives easy, but we have fallen below the recommend saving by the rules of the scheme.

I don't know if anyone knows of any other type of grants for this?

I have looked but can't find any.

The tick boxes to qualify are maddening.....they wanted to put external rendering/insulation over our Victorian red brick cottage. Also, we don't all want a wet system with maintenance costs.....I would have preferred replacement high heat retention storage radiators....far less things to go wrong and I don't want a big unit in our courtyard garden (it would block the path too). Could they put internal insulation instead of cavity wall? Also solar can be a headache.... we're now on our third inverter and 4th water heating diverter since our installation 7yrs ago

There’s a couple of grants that might be available for you, if you live in England.

The first two are from your local council, if they do it, the Home Upgrage Grant and the Sustainable Warmth Grant.

The other one is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme but this contributes only £5,000 towards the installation of a heat pump, so you may need to find the rest of the money yourself. Some mortgage companies have preferable rates for energy efficiency work. Details here: https://www.gov.uk/apply-boiler-upgrade-scheme

If you live in Scotland, Home Energy Scotland have grants: https://www.homeenergyscotland.org/funding/
