Reading books with a pen and highlighter and underlining, highlighting, and taking notes of various aspects of writing you admire in the books you are reading.

My husband thinks this is madness and I should use a notebook. But I find this so much more satisfying and easier in the moment, ignoring the chaos of searching through books later.

I just bought a new set of my favorite series in paperback so I can do this very thing. I’ll have a marked up soft cover version, and my pristine unmarked hardcover version.

That’s just the difference between reading and studying. Besides, they are your books. How you consume them is up to you.

I should add that some people even like reading this way, and that’s fine too.

If he's never ever gonna read the book, totally normal. Otherwise, still totally normal and he should respect your desire to hone your own writing craft.
