My son is 13 months and he only has one safe food for lunch and tea (mash potatoe) if I offer mash potatoe at every meal as his safe food isnt this enabling him to be a picky eater.
I have done this for a week now and he doesn't try anything else and waits to be fed the mash potate. For example, we are having omlettes for tea tonight.
It seems crazy that I'm offering him omlette anf mash potatoe and yesterday we had rice. So he had rice and potatoe on his plate.
From my experience with my daughter I just feel like its repeating and I'm going to have another child who only eats one thing.
TIA x
Can I get some help understanding the Safe food
Our meals consist of stages. 1st veggies or soup, then main course, then meat or cheeses, then fruits, then dessert. Even if my daughter doesn't like veggies, she has to watch and smell the portion of veggies on her plate.
This way, I am able to slightly expand her food choices. You can try this too - put the safe food at the last stage.
Just keep on serving other food options & look for other ideas on the internet. At 16 mos my daughter only ate blended fruits - now her safe foods expanded to 20-30 @ 4yrs old, depending on mood or season. So hang on there mom, just keep on trying.

A safe food is something that they’re able to eat and eat as much as they like in order to feel full. They’re trusting in you to provide that food. Imagine if someone had provided you with a plate of wherever your favourite go to meal is.
But they’re really reluctant to provide you with it because they’d really prefer that you ate that plate of dog poop they’ve been nagging you about.
He’s not doing this to he awkward.
He’d just rather eat what feels familiar and safe.
Don't miss: Is it safe for babies [9 months] to drink Hollandia EVAP milk?

We try to give slightly different versions of the safe foods to help expand our PE's tolerance for new food. So, for a mashed potato, would he be willu3ng to eat little cubes or chunks of potato within a mash?
Then if he eats that a few times, offer just little chunks. Then maybe shredded potatoes. Basically just slightly changing presentation, texture, color gradually. But offering the new version with the safe and familiar version.

Always provide their safe food.
It offers stability so they don't feel anxious around feeding. Anxiety will make it worse and then they'll never try anything. Just keep offering other options with safe foods and let them know they can try it if they want.
Eventually they will try.
Explore these too: I always put a plate in front of my daughter with at least one safe food and then I’ll put a vegetable or whatever else

I guess every child is different, but what kind of works for me is always putting a safe food on my child’s plate and then something I want him to try. He almost always eats smothered rice and chicken for dinner (that’s one of his safe dinner foods), and I’ll put a veggie (the food I want him to try) on the plate.
He also likes cooking with me and through this he has tried some foods that I haven’t even offered him before.
Essentially, what I’m saying is ALWAYS give him his safe foods, but also offer new foods. Put food out on the table; offer him food from your plate; play with toy food; cook with him. My child is still a picky eater, but every once in a while he’ll try a new food.

Encouraging him to feed himself the mashed potatoes himself could be a good step. When he feeds himself the safe food there is a chance he might try the new food himself.
It’s easier for them to try the new thing when they are in control. Also I’ve had mine try different things if I casually leave a little snack bowl out in the living room and it’s not part of meals.

Explore these too: Do y’all say safe food cause they have food allergies or safe foods cause that’s what they like?Just keep sticking at it. Xx
I struggle with this too. I offer my son some sort of purée with each meal because I know he’ll eat it. But I keep offering him other foods with it in the hopes he’ll eat them one day.
I’m also not sure if I’m doing it right!
