Am I being unreasonable? We have a 5acre hobby farm worth around 1.2m and the house desperately needs renovation. My husband is insisting we only need a flat melamine cheap kitchen (because he is a tight a**) but I want a shaker style as I believe it adds so much more value, looks a million times nicer and once we sell will be more appealing than a boring basic kitchen with no character. The kicker is, He is also a cabinet maker so we are already saving heaps of money!!

I feel like I’m right here… Thoughts?

Cabinetmaker here, this is our current kitchen I did, and the same style I did in my last house. It's a good chance to show off your skills and really improve the house value. Tell him I said to pull his finger out!

By the way, we are always broke, and I still managed to build this.

I have had this argument with my partner a few times now while discussing our future Reno’s (he is a carpenter).

It comes down to just because you are building it doesn’t mean you get to have the final say… that usually shuts him up long enough to prove I’m right.

Don't miss: I’m struggling with trying not to feel like ‘I have no good Reno ideas’

I like the idea of flat (definitely not a gloss finish - matte!), and adding some panelling or feature to one area or the island if you have one.

I'd meet in the middle on this one.

Start making the cupboards yourself he’ll be there in heartbeat showing you how it’s done.

Did you consider to replace the husband, perhaps? There are many wonderful men who would support your wish and need for a beautiful kitchen to suit your beautiful home and your heart.

Just a thought.

I think there’s a rule of thumb for resale anyway that a kitchen is 5% of house value and a bathroom is 2%, that’s what I’ve heard anyway, you wouldn’t put a super basic flat pack kitchen into a multi million dollar mansion.

Therefore for your value $60,000 kitchen and $24,000 bathroom.

I've had to be super creative to get around this exact argument with my hubby. He is not a cabinet maker lol but we have decided to get paneling done on the island as a feature point and flat on the rest of the cabinets. Much like this image. It'll give us "modern country farmhouse"

It's crazy that, as a cabinet maker, this is his opinion. Are you thinking of moving in the very near future? Trying to understand his logic.

That flat style kitchen is where dreams go to die.

Just the fact that you have waited 2 years using a tall boy for a pantry, I’d say he should be using his trade as a huge advantage to go with his patient other half on this one!!
