Personally, as a reader, I hate sad endings.

I don't mind tragedy, sadness, loss, etc, in the story but when I get to that last page, I want the characters I've become invested in to be in a good place.

I would prefer a suitable ending for the story and characters, not one catered to the audience based on expectations or formula.
