Hoping someone can help with a tax question! I had a full time job and a second job that was taxed as BR I’ve now finished my full time job which my tax code was 1509, do I need to do anything to stop me being taxed BR in my second job? Or will it eventually kick in? hope this makes sense.

:D TIA x

Similar thing happened to me years ago, I was made redundant from a full time job and got a part time job, a couple of months later went back to my full time job but kept the part time job. I explained to wages that I'd gone back to the main job and that I would be taxed from them as well. They did nothing and I never got taxed properly for 2 1/2 years. Once I left the part time job I started to get a tax bill coming through telling me I owed £6000. I got in touch with them asking to take it out of my wages to which they refused due to the amount owed. Never heard nothing for months then I got a self assessment form through the post to which I ignored due to the fact my wages are through paye I'm not self employed, for the next 3 years I received another 3, then all of a sudden my tax code changed to 81 from 1256. Started paying loads more tax. I thought at last they've started taking the money I owed. However I gave them a call just to check and was told no I still owed the 6k but I also owed £1000 each for not filling out the self assessment forms.

So now my tax bill had gone up to £10,000. I explained that on the phone to them that I've never filled out self assessment forms before because I've never been self employed. They said it didn't matter and I owed the money, I explained I'd leave my job rather than pay, the bloke laughed and said they'd get it one way or another.

Luckily I went to CAB and the person I spoke to had recently gone through something similar with his wife. Apparently they can't touch you after 5 years.

Anyway he got on the phone to them, I could hear them protesting and then they went quite and after he'd finished they apologised to me, wiped off the whole 10k and my tax code went back to normal and they refunded all the money they had taken.

My advice is if you can hang it out for 5 years do so if not start paying before it rises.

Your first job should issue you with a P45. Give that to the employer of your second job and they can use your tax code in that employment.

Or call HMRC - if you have more than one job you can also split your tax code.

Pre pandemic, I found best times to ring HMRC was 1st thing in morning, or teatime when others were travelling home from work. They're very helpful.

Best wishes..

If you can add your information via the online account I’d recommend doing it that way.

If not then try calling them or if they still have webchat use that facility and explain the situation.

If you have left your old job you should have a p45 (in normal circumstances you would hand it in to your new employer) however if you were to do this and the BR employer operated the p45 info it could cause issues such as wrong tax codes/ year to date pay/tax etc which could end up in an under payment of tax.

Contact HMRC via the app or call/webchat and get them to review and ensure your records are set up correctly with the correct pay/tax figures which should give you the right code aswell.

Don't miss: I am on child tax credit, if I put in for my child to have DLA will I be moved to UC

Phone HMRC 0300 200 3300. You will need your national insurance number. Phone lines are really busy. Or register for on line account. The change in your tax code won't happen automatically.

When I had a couple of jobs my tax was always wrong and I was always having to ring to get the tax code for my second job changed.

At one time I had 4 jobs because in one of my jobs the after school club and the holiday club were classed as 2 part time jobs even they were part of the same company then I also had a Saturday job and another part time job in the holidays.

Explore these too: I have had a bill from FedEx for tax and duty charges for a parcel I bought for my grandsons birthday – So..

You should get a P45 from your main employer.

Call up the tax office and let them know you only have 1 job now. Ask them to put that job as your main job.

As long as you weren't a high earner , the BR is always set to 20%. This means , you'll always pay 20% tax from that job.

You might end up slightly overpaying tax (depending how frequently you are paid) until you get the tax code changed.

Contact HMRC and advise them that your 2nd job is now your main job so they need to change your tax allowance into this job. Make sure you have your p45 from your old main job as there will be info on this that will help them to amend for the right deductions
