We need a break from our kids.. with a flexible Budget

Post by Guest »

Favorite parents-only, reconnect vacation spot? We need a break from our kids.. and the grandparents will take them for a week sometime in Feb or April/May.

We're going to gift each other a trip instead of Christmas/ Hanukkah/birthday gifts (all between December - February).

We've been to all the Hawaiian Islands so while they would be lovely it doesn't sound that exciting, husband isn't into Mexico because he doesn't want to be at a big soulless resort, he's lukewarm about the idea of a cruise but only if it's on one of the more upscale lines, and... what else?

I think our max flying time (from the West Coast) is 5-6 hours. Budget is... flexible. Maybe up to $5k for a week? But that can be worked...

Thanks!

Costa Rica last Feb was perfect. We absolutely loved Rio Perdido, flew in/out of Liberia. Southwest has several direct flights there.

From the west coast a small place in Mexico is actually perfect. Mexico is so much more than large resorts …

The beaches, water, and snorkeling in Curacao are lovely. Clearest water I have seen. We rented a VRBO and a car. Spent our time road tripping around the island to lots of small, lovely beaches for snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing. It was very hot their in September. I am guessing February would be better.

My husband and I did a small boutique hotel in tulum where we were able to disconnect.

If you would like more info reply and I can set you up with the name of the hotel and the person who helped with concierge down in Tulum.

I don’t like resort like hotels with the exception of traveling with kids they are accommodating specifically for that.

We didn't think we would like cruising either, we preferred independent travel.

Then our son organized a family cruise ( he thought at our "age" we should start cruising) we really enjoyed it and would highly recommend.

It actually started our love of cruising. It was our first and we have been on two more since then.

We did an Alaska cruise this summer. My husband was not keen on a cruise. We both loved it and are looking at booking another. We went on Oceania. They cater to adults. Very few kids. Upscale and amazing food!

I know you said a 5-6 hour flight but our best connection vacations have been Ireland and Scotland. We rented cars for both and made sure to schedule some of our trip to more remote countryside locations. Sharing a tiny little hut overlooking the ocean and watching the waves crash during a storm is ridiculously romantic. We’ve done both locations for well under $5k

I agree, if limiting travel time, and don’t want a soulless resort, Costa Rica, Belize or Yucatán peninsula of Mexico. A condo or home with multiple bedrooms and a large living area to hang out with planned day trips. Easy and affordable to mix beach chilling, culture, water activity and jungle. Splitting time in 2 accommodations will expose you to more choices as these countries have such a vast difference from one region to another. But if you want more time hanging out, research what you want to do first before choosing a hub.
