Hello! I’m doing a short trip to Thailand and Vietnam this spring. Since we only have so much time (approx. 3 weeks in each/6 weeks total) we’ve decided to only go to one mountain town—either Pai, Thailand or Sapa, Vietnam.

For those who have been to both, wondering if you think one is better and why.

We don’t plan on motorbiking either/not confident enough on a bike. More so looking for input on the town itself and surround areas accessible by transport/hiking.

Thanks!

Depends on the month for Sapa bc most of its beauty comes from the rice paddy field when it’s in season (green or yellow). In months from Jan - April there’s no rice paddies field so the whole town doesn’t look nice.

Pai has a great vibe and food, they also have some local hot springs which are worth a visit, there is also pai canyon and white water rafting nearby

Sapa is a hill town, so walking around is a good exercise. Good markets, cafes and bars, good tour info. Plus many nearby villages you can homestay at. Getting there, train and bus. Chairlift to Fansipan or 2 day trek.

Pai is perfect to ride to, though most bus in, have your vomit bag ready...lol.

The town is quite flat, so walking is easy. A real hippie vibe about, there are some different music venues, great food, walking street market. Look for Fluid Pool for a days hangout.
