Thinking of going during Spring Break with the family.

It's safe in resort areas, but I wouldn't leave the area on my own, only on a WELL vetted excursion. The Cancun airport alone can be anxiety inducting. Anytime I read comments like "it's safe, my resort has armed guards" that doesn't make me feel safe, I don't want my resort NEEDING armed guards.

Also, the pictures of Cancun beaches vs reality is not the same. I send my clients to other destinations. If you want suggestions or advice let me know/message me. I will give them to you and I won't hound you or harass you to book a trip.

Safer than the US for sure to be honest.

This is going to be my mantra going forward…. Check the US or your country’s equivalent for travel warnings and *read why*. It’s so much quicker and less repetitive for group members.

We feel safer there than in the US these days. We are headed there in 2 weeks, in fact.

Very safe. If you don't seek out or do drugs, you are in basically no danger. I've gone there by myself before.

A lot of these comments about Cancun being safer than the US are just false. I would honestly avoid Cancun right now. Or at least avoid going anywhere off the resort. Cabo is a bit safer.

However, to me it isn't worth the risk of something going wrong.

We take private transportation and the resorts we’ve stayed at in riviera Maya and Costa Mujeres all have guards at the entrances. I’d be more concerned w drunk college kids at the resorts during spring break -- the only excursions we take are booked thru the hotel or our travel agent for safety.

Staying at the resorts is perfectly fine. Some areas of Cancun have much better beaches than others. We love going and go every year with family and have never not felt safe but we also prebook our transport, stay at the resort (never have been to downtown Cancun) and do tours only through the resort or Viator.

It's interesting reading all the comments because you can tell who has spent any amount of time in Mexico. Full disclosure I haven't been to cancun yet but am flying there next month. I can tell you my experience having lived in PV for 6 months.

1. Every local I have spoken to says the cartel sticks to its business and knows to leave tourists alone. Any news you have seen and even some referenced here... it's not crime on tourists.

2. Every place has its dangers. I exercise precautions everywhere I travel; know where your most important docs are and your cash/phone are, keep them safe. Everything else is replaceable. Just as a note I was pick pocketed in Paris during my 2 weeks there and haven't had a single issue in MX.

3. Every choice in our life has risk, you only get one life to experience, and Mexico has so much beauty worth exploring. Make a calculated risk and enjoy life!
