I want to make sure I’m not getting conned.

If you think you are getting conned, you are.

That really depends. Like let's take an example of cover designer.
They can charge from $100-$1000 so choice is yours whom you hire?
Same goes for formatting, editing, and proofreading.

Don't miss: Apart from Amazon KDP, where else can I publish a Christian books to make sell?

Amazon doesn’t charge anything.

To publish to Amazon only, it does not cost anything.

However, if you want to use a cover artist, an editor, and an ISBN to make your book professional, those each have individual costs determined by the provider you hire.

Explore these too: I plan on publishing through Amazon and I have a question–

If you’re paying “Amazon” anything to publish, you’re getting conned by someone who isn’t Amazon.

A total of Nothing dollars. Amazon has their breakdown of your royalties, etc.. But they don’t require you to spend any money upfront.

ZERO the real Amazon does not charge to publish. Not a dime. If they're charging you, it's the fake kdp.

If you're asking what you need to spend in terms of advertising to sell on Amazon, that answer is going to differ depending on your genre, whether or not you are wide of KU only, and what other sorts of things are you doing to promote and sell your book.

Running ads either through Amazon or Facebook, or Google or wherever will cost you more if you don't know what you are doing.

It doesn't cost anything to publish your book on Amazon. What costs you is the creation of the book itself, promotion, and advertising and this is going to vary author to author.

For example, I spend an average of $150-$250 on a cover, and around $200-$400 on editing, about $100-$200 on proofreading, and $30 for formatting. I usually do a Book Rebel, which costs me about $25. Sometimes I do paid NL spots too. My ads average about $100-$200.

Someone else might spend $50 on covers, $500 on developmental, editing, and proofreading, run no ads, and format their books themselves.

But ultimately, if someone is saying they will charge you X amounts of money to "publish" your book, stay away. A publisher will never charge to publish. And if you self publish your book, you don't pay to actually publish it.

Zero.

There are no fees or cost to publish on KDP. However, you may find yourself in need of enlisting paid providers for editing, proofreading, marketing, etc.

Those are all unrelated to the act of publishing on KDP itself.

You prepare your cover and content files.

You then upload the two files and build your book. You can provide an ISBN that you bought, or use an exclusively Amazon ISBN for free.

There is no cost to you from Amazon for anything at all. It makes its money from a chunk of the sales.

Don't forget to take a look at: I just cannot upload cover page in my Amazon's Paperback book submission

You can upload your book through KDP into Amazon free.

However, Amazon does have a marketing team that charges a fee. I don't know all the details, since I haven't used it yet. This is my next step.

The reason that Amazon doesn't charge is because they get a portion of the sales for each book, so you shouldn't have to pay anything unless you're paying someone else for cover design, formatting, editing, marketing, etc.

Uploading to amazon doesn't cost if you do it yourself. If you need help with formatting, editing, cover design, etc then that will cost. You may need help with these things if you want a good, professional end result. Amazon is a print on demand model.

You will receive @60% of your book's RRP less print costs.

For example if you sell your book for £5 and it costs £2 to print you'll get £5 x 60% - £2 = £1

Technically nothing, but remember that you still have all the costs of a publisher. You have to pay for an editor, a designer, any copies that you want to sell in person, any costs related to distribution, like shipping, your website, all marketing and advertising costs.

Self-publishing is far from free. It may be the best choice for you, but you ask the question about selling. Publishing is free, but ensuring you have the quality, the distribution, and the marketing, not so much.

You upload your book to amazon yourself for free. It doesn't cost anything. I have two books published on amazon. I only spent $75 per book for formatting. I did everything else by myself.

If someone is asking you to pay them to publish your book, you are being conned. It's fine to pay someone to edit your book, or format your book, or design a book cover, or pay for your own ISBNs.

But you can pay that yourself directly to a professional for a fraction of what these vanity publishers charge.
