However, there is only about a 2cm gap either side, plenty gap back and top but worried about causing a fire, any help or tips.

Let’s be honest.

Who cooks in a microwave, we just use it for few minutes to reheat.

Don't worry. Mine’s been like that for 10 years. every now and then i pull it out and clean underneath it.

I bought a microwave designed for installation in an oven tower and a trim kit to match and the heat it generates when convection or grill mode is used is terrifying.

It would destroy the cabinets above if those functions were used for more than a few minutes at a time.

On microwave it's okay, but the condensation is over the top. I wouldn't risk installing one not designed for benchtop use, because even those designed for installation in a tower give off way too much heat.

Could you cut a big hole in the top piece above the microwave? That could then be the vent hole.

Unless it’s a really old crappy microwave it should be just fine, most microwaves are placed in column sections pretty tightly.
