I’m flying Narita (NRT) > SEA, with a 20 hour layover in Calgary (YYC). I will leave YYC and go to a hotel downtown, returning the next morning for the last leg.

THEN I fly home out of SEA via a different airline. Separate itineraries.

If I purchase a bottle of alcohol at the NRT duty free, what do I do with it whilst in YYC? Are there storage lockers at the airport?

And I probably need to check them in SEA? I’m already at 2 bags checked and while I’m flying first and get two free bags there probably isn’t room. I went sort of bonkers with gift buying.

I think I know the answer to this one (I don’t get to buy duty free Japanese whisky) but just in case I’m not seeing something obvious I would appreciate any advice.

I have gone through security before with a bag still sealed from duty-free. I was in South America.

I bought some things duty-free I had an overnight layover in Atlanta the next day I went back in. I presented them with the bag still sealed with the receipt in it, they opened it up.

They swabbed all my bottles, and then they gave it back to me, and I walked through security with it your mileage may vary.

I recently flew the same trip, from NRT to Calgary to Seattle. At Narita, I purchased a bottle of Japanese whiskey at the duty free shop. I explained to the cashier my layover in Calgary but the final destination was Seattle. They sealed it in a clear bag.

When I arrived in Calgary we had to go through customs (USA customs, they told me I wouldn't do customs after I landed in Seattle), and they opened the sealed bag, opened the whiskey box, then taped the bag shut.

So, I suggest mentioning that Calgary is a layover for you, but it worked out just fine for me. I had researched it on TSA's website before purchasing the bottle and they also mention needing the clear sealed duty-free bag.

PS: I missed the part about you leaving the airport. As someone else mentioned, that could pose an issue, but asking the airline and airport directly might help.

I would caution that tsa won’t always let you through even with the sealed bag. I would definitely find room in your checked luggage

Price out at home what you want to buy. Duty free prices aren’t necessarily cheaper.

Look up the Canadian rules. Also, you'll have to go through Canadian customs so ask them too.
