Planning a trip to Iceland in October. We’re thinking 4 or 5 days. Any recommendations on what to do, tours to take, places to eat, hotels, what we should pack lol we live in Florida so know we will have to get some heavier clothes, but wondering what we’ll really need.
Thank you!
Where should I start planning a trip to Iceland?
Most important thing: You’re going to want waterproof EVERYTHING. Heavy Parka, goretex pants, and hiking shoes at minimum. If I remember correctly, October is the wettest month. The weather is crazy, it will be rainy and freezing cold and windy at times. Just expect that. I’ve been 7 times to Iceland and going again next month! Hopefully the volcano is still going when you get there!!!
Also October is one of the best months to see the aurora!

We took winter clothes for our July trip and needed them (and more.). Think lots of layers, sweaters, scarves, and gloves. Definitely rent a car and do a lot of the Golden Circle. We went snorkeling at Silfra and loved every minute of it. Stayed at AirBnBs except for one night at the Blue Lagoon (expensive but worth it). We loved every bit of our adventure....just keep in mind that Iceland is expensive, so if you don't bring it with you, you will pay a hefty price for it over there.
I suggest renting a car to explore. We had an airbnb in Reykjavik and then did day trips from there. We did one day to Vik with stops along the way and went to the Secret Lagoon near Fludir on our way back. Then one day the Golden circle. And one day trip up north to snaefellsjokul with different stops there and back. Be prepared for the wind ( I had a ponytail basically the entire time we were there). Such an amazing country!!
I did a South Coast Tour, Snafellsnes Peninsula Tour, and Golden Circle and all were amazing!! I also did the Sky and Blue Lagoons and both were awesome. For restaurants, Messin has delicious local Arctic char if you like fish. We also found fried lobster tacos at Sjávargrillið (I think) that were super good. I also heard Kol restaurants is yummy!
Layers!! And if you plan to visit the waterfalls and get up close with them, waterproof clothing and shoes! (Buy it secondhand from a site like EBay, Poshmark or ThredUP)
We went in 2018 and glad we took waterproof gear!

It is the coldest summer in 30 years. I was just in Iceland last week and wore pants and two jackets plus a warm hat and at times gloves. It will be much colder in October. 4 days you won’t be able to do the entire ring road. I’d suggest 1 day - Golden circle, 1 day Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss to Vik. 1 day - stay in Vik and drive to Jokusarlon and back. 1 day drive out to Snaefelsness. 1 day Hveragerđi hot river hike plus a day in Reykjavik. 1 day before airport drive out to Reykjanesviti and (if you like) Blue Lagoon.
