Hi everyone, I am finding it impossible to get travel insurance cover with existing medical conditions, which in itself is not difficult but I recently had a medical condition which resulted in no diagnosis after numerous xrays etc, but the hospital has referred me to a eye specialist and neurology as non urgent and both have a 52 week wait, however because of the 2 referrals I am being told by insurance companies that they will exclude cover for ALL existing medical conditions.

I am in despair now and it's looking like i/we will have to cancel our holiday flights etc and lose all the money we have paid. Sorry this posting is so long but every detail matters. Is there anyone who can recommend a company who will help me/us.

Thank you
Malvine

I'm struggling too, was put on the hip replacement list a year ago and as I am 'awaiting treatment' I can't get cover.

If they are just not insuring for all existing, unless you have a condition now that would stop you travelling etc... then take insurance covering for everything but existing conditions.

How do the insurance company know about the two referrals? Referrals are not a diagnosis. You cant pay for a referral.

I can’t get insurance, but I wasn’t doing without a holiday, so I still go (due to illness).

All clear excluded a condition awaiting diagnosis for me.

Most insurance companies won't insure whilst under investigation. Have you tried a package bank account. I pay £15 pm for annual travel insurance, roadside relay and mobile phone cover.

I ended up in hospital last year with an unknown life threatening condition and they paid out for my holiday that I had to cancel.

Lucky, I did cancel as ended up back there for another week with the same thing. When it got diagnosed they agreed to cover.

Can you speak to a broker or an insurance company to explain this?

I spoke to someone on the phone at Insure n go because my eye condition didn’t fit into a tick box.

Obviously if you did manage to get your condition across and that is the conclusion then this advice is totally useless ;)

If you are going to Europe could you use EHIC?

I also highly recommend Goodtogoinsurance I have multiple medical issues and was also waiting to see my consultant during that time I broke my hip and had a total hip replacement.

I have had a left knee replacement and due to Covid was still waiting to see my consultant for a date for surgery to replace my right knee. Goodtogoinsurance sorted out insurance for me they didn’t cover my knee replacement but did cover all my other conditions it did cost me over £600 but it was worth it to get away…

I used Staysure for a friend with existing conditions but then she got cancer just before her holiday. They would no longer cover her even when she’d had it removed. Therefore she couldn’t go so had to claim her holiday cost back.

Next time I used Allclear, they’ll cover existing conditions, except for things you haven’t yet had a diagnosis for. They had been prepared to cover my friend for cancer the time before, but the cost of the policy was over the cost of her holiday.

I asked insurancewith for insurance while waiting for tests.

They wouldn’t do it but gave me a list of companies who would insure for all except the condition I was awaiting tests for.

That is normal for insurance to exclude these existing medical problems while you wait diagnoses.

There are specialist insurance companies you can talk to but they will exclude these new ones also. It depends on you and how you feel about your health and wellbeing and can you take the risk?

Suggested: Any recommendations for a travel insurance company that doesn't cost an arm and a leg!
